Treatment must be started within 6 months of completing the assessment. It is highly recommended to enroll in treatment at the completion of the Assessment.

In the state of North Carolina, a DWI Substance Abuse Assessment is a requirement for individuals convicted of Driving While Impaired (DWI). The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate whether a person has a problem with alcohol or drugs, and it typically involves an interview conducted by a Licensed or Certified Substance Abuse Counselor.

The assessment process usually includes a structured questionnaire that helps the counselor gather information about the individual’s alcohol or drug use history, patterns of use, and any associated problems or consequences. The counselor may also ask questions about the individual’s personal and family history, mental health, and any prior treatment experiences.

Based on the information gathered during the assessment, the counselor will make an evaluation regarding the severity of the person’s substance abuse problem and determine appropriate recommendations for treatment or education programs. These recommendations are crucial for individuals seeking to restore their driver’s license or obtain a Limited Driving Privilege.

It’s important to note that in North Carolina, DWI, and Substance Abuse assessments, as well as the related treatment or education programs, can only be conducted by facilities licensed by the state. This ensures that the assessment and treatment processes adhere to the state’s standards and requirements.

Items Necessary for an Assessment:

Traffic Citation – can be obtained from the Clerk of Court

Blood Alcohol Concentration level – We are required to have written proof of your Breathalyzer reading (BAC) or proof of refusal (usually on driving record) if you were arrested for DWI. You can also obtain a copy of the breathalyzer or blood test from the clerk’s office or have your attorney fax verification to us.

Copy of Court Judgment – can be obtained from the Clerk of Court

NC DMV Driver Vehicle Record – A copy of your lifetime driving record from the DMV. It must be signed or stamped by the NC DMV. If you don’t have one, Life Net Services will order one online for you while you are at our office for a fee. The generated report must not be older than 30 days.

Payment – Payment of $100 for the assessment.

Conviction Date – If applicable

Paid your fees and can’t get your driver’s license restored?

The most common reason for delays in getting driver’s licenses restored is the client did not inform the assessing agency of the conviction date. It is the client’s responsibility to notify the DWI assessment agency of the correct date. Until we are notified that the case has been resolved and the outcome date, a “508” form cannot be completed. The “508” form is the document the State of NC requires to process the paperwork allowing for the restoration of driving records.

Education or substance abuse treatment is required of people convicted of Driving While Impaired by the State of NC. Depending on the level recommended by the assessment, classes or treatment may last from 1 week to 90 days or more.

Level 1: Alcohol and Drug Education Traffic School (ADETS)
For the first-time offender
Time Frame: 16 hours of education

Level 2: Short Term
For offenders who have completed ADETS, had a BAC over .14, refused the breathalyzer, or meet criteria for substance abuse.
Time Frame: 20 hours of treatment over 30 days.

Level 3: Long Term
For offenders who meet the criteria for substance dependence, or who have completed a level 2 program
Time Frame: 40 hours of treatment over 60 days

Level 4: Intensive Outpatient Treatment
For offenders who meet criteria for substance dependence (with or without physiological dependence), or who have completed a level 3 program.
Time Frame: 90 days

Level 5: Inpatient Treatment
Life Net Services does not provide this level of treatment, we can, however, make a referral to this level of treatment.

ADETS is required by NC DWI Services only for people who meet NC DWI Services standards for education only. Prime for Life is the only approved curriculum for ADETS. To qualify for ADETS, the DWI client must have:

• BAC below .15
• Never had a prior conviction lifetime
• Have no diagnosis of a substance use disorder
• And other criteria required and defined by NC DWI Services

• A fee of $160.00 plus a $25 Book Fee will be due. The total is $185.
• Absences are not allowed – You must attend all 5 nights to complete the class
• You must Arrive On-time – Please ensure you are connected on time for each class from a secure and private location, free from distractions – anyone arriving more than 10 minutes late, will not be admitted to class.
• The maximum number of students per class is 20.

We may refer individuals to other community-based services, such as mental health and medical care, to address any underlying issues that may contribute to their substance use.
